Caring for your Crown

A crown is a seal that is capped over a whole tooth. Covering the whole tooth ensures it is thoroughly protected and the crown is secure. It is common knowledge crowns are inserted to strengthen weak teeth. Dentists in Halifax have said many people are unaware that crowns are also used to make teeth more aesthetically pleasing, to improve shape and size of a tooth and to prevent further deterioration.

According to dentists, on average a good quality dental crown lasts a minimum of ten years. So when the crown has been inserted you only need take to care of it the same way as you would take care of your normal teeth. i.e., regular brushing and regular checkups.

The Crown process

The first step the dentist will take is preparing your tooth for the crown. This usually involves drilling the tooth to make it a suitable shape for the crown to be fitted. Once the tooth has been prepared an impression of your tooth is taken to tailor a crown to suit you, which is the second stage of the process.  Whilst your crown is being made, a temporary crown is inserted on your tooth until you return for fitting which is usually between two and three weeks time. After this wait for the production of you crown comes the final stage of the procedure in which the temporary crown is simply removed and the crown is fitted.

Although having a crown means you will have to make at least one return trip to the dentist. It is well worth it as a crown will protect your tooth in the long term and could prevent bad toothache.
